Define if Are you trying to create an online store that sells and ships products? or if you have an offline business that only needs an online presence where people can find you to get information about your services and contact you? These are just a few of the questions you need to answer yourself before contacting your potential web designer.

It is important to be realistic with your objectives, this can help you make the decision of how much you are willing or not to invest in your online presence more flexible. If you are just starting out, it is not advisable to go for expensive and highly personalized options, on the other hand, if you already have a well-established business and what you want is a tool to manage and increase your sales, it is probably worth creating a more elaborate website

Research other websites you like (or don't like) in your industries

One of the most common questions asked before making a web page, is what other websites or elements of other websites they like or do not like. It's a good idea to have a list of some of your favorite and least favorite websites, be specific and include what or why you like them or not. This can be anything from colors, style, functionality, usability, large fonts, navigation, etc.

People looking to hire a web designer often answer this question with a list of their competitors' websites. While this is helpful, it is important to look outside of your own industry.

Do you want to be able to easily edit the content on your website yourself at any time once you are online? So you probably want to use a content management system (CMS), like WordPress. Would you rather pay to have someone update your website every time you need to make changes? So you can do without a CMS, possibly saving some money on designing and developing it, but over time you will probably end up paying more with each issue that comes out.

Knowing or at least having a minimal understanding of what you prefer could narrow down the field in which you are looking. Be sure to ask potential candidates what path they will take with your project.
